“There Can Be Only One”
Oh dear! This film is so very close to my heart. The first time I saw it, I was with Mr. Cynflr in Edinburgh. Mr. Cynflr was like “oh let’s watch this, it’s quality”, in a so-bad-it’s-good campy way. It was ace. A French actor playing someone from the Highlands; a Scottish institution (Sean Connery) playing someone from Spain; some bloke from somewhere playing an evil Russian (it was the 80s, of course the evil guy had to be Russian); effects that now are terrible but in their times were… terrible too; gratuituous sex scene that had everything but coprophagia (Team America y’all); and ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS EVER MADE, BY QUEEN. It’s a bit of a shame they didn’t realease an Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, but It’s a kind of magic was pretty much the unofficial OST. And it’s a really, really heavy scene when Connor’s wife dies of old age (taking her rape to the grave) with Who wants to live forever as musical background. It’s even heavier when you listen to it know, years after Freddy Mercury passed away.
Anyway, this film is such an overlooked classic. Without it, the 80s wouldn’t have just been the same.
Aww, and I totally agree. Plus, i’m a queen fan since I was 5 y/o! :)
